Dear All

Thank you for participating in the session today. We covered what our members had request prior to their exam shortly.

Also this is out second last session of the current course.

The communication scenario was regarding a 1 day old baby with ambiguous genitalia and task was to explain to parents and discuss management.

Video station was a of a 6 month baby with excessive weight gain and tonic movement of all 4 limbs progressively increasing.

We had good practice session for both and good discussion.

The Learning points are:

  • A newborn baby is Good news and do NOT make it SAD just because all is not ‘perfect’.
  • Congratulate parents and discuss what is ‘different’ from other babies and how it could be ‘fixed’.
  • Read ALL the information given very carefully as each word in the description is important.
  • Avoid jargon – have to use a medical term – explain it.
  • Keep it simple – like speaking to a 10 years old.
  • Examine baby together with ‘parent’ to acknowledge / highlight difference from normal.
  • Describing in abstract if difficult and difficult to understand.
  • Do Not over think – Common things are common.
  • Be a positive doctor – bearer of Good news. Please visit www.mrcpchclinicals.org to add your comments or points I may have missed.
