MRCPCH COURSE – Communication- CT scan

Dear All

Thank you for participating in the session today.

In RRR we discussed:

  • Post Renal transplant complications
  • Ill child with joints involvement
  • Chronic constipation – causes

The Communication scenario was of a 2 year old admitted following a convulsion, diagnosed as Febrile Convulsion secondary to Otitis media. Father is insisting on a CT scan to be sure. Dr P was in the hotseat, Dr S was a very able role player and Dr M had the examiner hat. Dr P made a very good attempt at the task of dealing with an angry adamant father. There was good feedback by Dr M.

The Learning points are:

  • Do NOT forget a chaperone – ward sister / nurse
  • How can I help – what have you been told?
  • Check Rp’s prior knowledge before your input
  • Move to Rp’s agenda
  • Do not give too much information
  • 30 sec Rule – do NOT forget
  • Dialogue and not a monologue
  • Avoid jargon – keep it SIMPLE
  • You MUST NOT try to tell everything you know
  • Use information leaflets
  • ARMMS – remember
