MRCPCH CLINICAL COURSE: What and How to ….

Dear All

Today we had our first session on the current course preparing for the exam this winter.

In this session we covered the basics and structure of Clinical exam. 10 sessions – how they play out in 12 stations in the exam.

There are Talking stations and Doing stations. Talking stations: Communication, History & Management, Video and Doing Stations: Clinical 4 stations & Development – that at present is also literally a ‘talking station’ as there are no children present and you need to Verbalize your examination assessment of the child.

Communication is the most important Domain as you earn marks across all stations and not only the Two Communication stations.

The Learning points are:

  • Need to UNLEARN few ‘habits’
  • Need to try and speak ‘slowly’ if possible
  • Emphasis is different to that of ‘Indian Exams’.
  • Learnt the Structure of Exam
  • Communication skills – important to work on
  • Read basic theory – Do NOT look at Reference books
  • Hot seat, Role Player, Examiner hats

We will continue with Communication on Thursday.
