We discussed approach to Clinical stations in the exam and also had practice in the hotseat sessions.
Clinical stations require:
- Not to be nervous
- Smooth flowing examination technique
- Inspection / Observation – Palpation – Percussion – Auscultation
- Observations start as soon as you enter the room.
- General Physical examination is part of EVERY station – and is not mentioned specifically
- Observe the surroundings / environment while child gets ‘undressed’ exposes the ‘part’.
- Gait and Gower’s is done now – if required.
- Observe the child – scars on chest with arms above the head – walk around
- Kneel down to look for scars on the legs.
- Then – ask the child to go on to the couch and carry on with systematic examination.
- In discussion – give diagnosis first or differential with supporting +ve & -ves
- Do NOT comment or explain what has not been asked – to avoid a mistake
- Practice to finish the exam in 5 minutes
Specific systems require basic knowledge of physiology on finger tips and do not get mixed up.
